You can find our café on Park Lane in Poynton, Cheshire, where we provide support, friendship, employment and training for survivors of modern slavery.

It all started with a gifted ice cream machine, which Gavin Murray used to make ice cream for his family.
In 2007 Sally Murray, Gav's wife, was listening to a talk given by Ben Cooley, who would go on to found the charity Hope for Justice the following year. Ben was talking about how women and girls were being trafficked and treated in the most appalling way. Sally and Gav were never the same again...
One day, whilst serving some of his homemade ice cream (a common occurrence), Gav said "If I ever had a shop, it would be an ice cream shop, and it would somehow help the fight against human trafficking. You know, for social justice." As the children happily guzzled their ice cream, Sally immediately responded "Oooh! We could call it Just-Ice!". Their hearts collectively skipped a beat and the dream was born!

Gav and Sally gave up their jobs in London and moved to Derby in 2017 to set up the ice cream shop they'd dreamed about. The café opened on 31st March 2018 at the Market Hall shopping centre and the dream became reality.
Just-Ice Derby moved to Darley Park when Market Hall closed for refurbishment, and opened 'the Hatch' on 1st June 2021. It is at the Hatch where Gav makes the delicious ethical ice cream Just-Ice is known for.
Of course, that's only part of the story. Just-Ice Derby also employs and supports survivors of modern slavery, who learn business skills and help Gav with making fabulous ethical ice cream!

It was when Jo Rodman was at a crossroads in her life when she met the inspirational Gav and Sally. After hearing Gav give a talk about Just-Ice and modern slavery in the autumn of 2019, Jo couldn't get the idea of starting a second Just-Ice café out of her head.
Just-Ice Poynton was established as a registered charity in October 2020. We began trading at local events in the spring of 2021 with our mobile ice cream trike 'Harriet'. The residents of Poynton were introduced to our delicious ethical ice cream and soon developed a taste for it!
Meanwhile, there was plenty of work going on behind the scenes to find the perfect premises for our new café...
Harriet - our mobile ice cream trike
Our dedicated team of trustees tirelessly searched for suitable premises for our ice cream café. It was at times a frustrating experience, and several tears were shed along the way, but their perseverance was rewarded when Just-Ice Poynton became the proud owners of 32 Park Lane!
After many months of dedicated hard work, our Poynton café opened to the public on 25th October 2021. It was a huge team effort and special mention must go to our amazing church families at St George's Church and St Martin's Church. The support of these fabulous people was both invaluable and humbling. We're forever grateful to these people for freely giving their time, skills, and gifts to help the café get up and running.

Just-Ice Poynton exists to help survivors of modern slavery rebuild their lives by providing friendship, support, and employment training in a safe environment.
In January 2022, we were both excited and a little nervous to welcome Huan*, our first beneficiary to sign up to our Employability Programme. Huan had endured severe exploitation and trauma in Vietnam and across Europe. He managed to escape though, tragically, his family lost their lives.
Huan grew enormously in confidence during his time at Just-Ice, gaining new skills and qualifications along the way. We're delighted that Huan has now started his own business and is settled in his own home.
Together with your support, Just-Ice Poynton is continuing to support vulnerable individuals and is changing lives for the better. Thank you!
* Name changed and face blurred to protect the survivor's identity.

We have been blessed to have had the support of our wonderful local community right from the beginning of our journey. There are so many people who we are forever grateful to, whether they volunteer at the café, support us financially, or freely give their time and skills.
Things are moving fast here at Just-Ice Poynton and we love sharing our breakthroughs with you!
